Two of the county’s eleven campgrounds can be found lakeside, offering adventure-seekers a front row seat to all the recreational opportunities Green River Lake has to offer. The lake is also home to Kentucky’s only floating cabins, accommodations custom-made for outdoor enthusiasts!

With an average depth of 50 feet and a distance of one mile at its widest point, Green River Lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating and water skiing – with over 40 miles of trails that twist around the picture-perfect spot. Visitors can explore the terrain by hiking, mountain biking, even horseback riding. Looking for a little R&R? Public beaches at Green River Lake State Park Campground and Smith Ridge Recreational Area are a welcome respite on a warm summer day.

For those interested in boating, 11 boat ramps are available for public use at Green River Lake, including one at each campground. Three marinas offer full services on the lake, including boat rental, slip rental, gas, bait, fishing gear, and picnicking supplies.

Fishing at Green can be quite rewarding too. Walleye, crappie, white bass, channel catfish, muskie and bluegill are all found in good numbers in the lake. Hunting on the land surrounding Green River Lake is also popular.

For those who love nature and wish to experience the natural beauty of Kentucky you’ll love exploring trails surrounding Green River Lake! There are 48.5 miles of multi-use for hiking, biking and horse back riding around Green River Lake and at least 10 more within the county.

Green River Lake State Park

Green River Lake State Park has 28 miles of trails twisting around the lake with some of the most scenic views in the region. The trails are multi-use for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.  Foot-travel is allowed on all trails, but bikes and horses are restricted from some trails.


US Army Corps of Engineers

The Corps of Engineers have 6 miles of hiking trails off Lake Road located between Soul Chapel Road and Site 1 Boat Ramp. The Salsman trail is 1.1 miles in length and offers a beautiful view of Green River Lake and the floating cabins at Green River Marina. The wooded path is well marked with trail markers.

The Corps operated campgrounds also have a total of  4.5 miles of  trails for hiking only.

  • Pikes Ridge Campground: A 1.5 mile hiking trail is near boat parking lot.
  • Smith Ridge Campground: The Woodland Nature Trail is 1.5 miles. It is across from shower house in A-loop and near site 31 in B-loop.
  • Holmes Bend Campground: The Valley Nature Trail  is 1.5 miles. It is located across from amphitheater.

A grocery, a dump station, and three central service buildings with showers, rest rooms, and a laundry facility are available. Enjoy sand between your toes and the gentle waves of Green River Lake at the campground beach. The parks also offers 28-miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking and horse back riding. Volleyball lovers can almost always find a pick-up game on the sand court or take an exhilarating swim. A great way for the entire family to play together is on the 18-hole, miniature golf course. Pets welcome!

Pikes Ridge Campground offers 60 campsites. Amenities include a dump station, boat ramp, playground, camper’s beach and fishing areas. There is no bathhouse, but pit and portable toilets are available. A hunter’s parking area, grocery store and firewood are nearby. Pets Welcome!

Enjoy the sand between your toes at one of the beaches on Green River Lake. At Green River Lake State Park, Smith Ridge and Holmes Bend the beaches are open to the public and no fee is charged. Pikes Ridge Campground also has a public beach but it is for registered campers use only.

The Visitor Center is a must see facility at the heart of Green River Lake. Located close to the Dam, the Visitor Center is a free attraction open to the public.  exhibits which include: Native American artifacts from the area, a live turtle display, water safety display and the big 1500 gallon fish aquarium. Visitors can also view a movie about Green River Lake in the theater which is located right in the Visitor Center. Just outside, visitors can tour The Atkinson Griffin Log house which was used as a civil war hospital, have a picnic or take in one of the many hiking trails. The Center is also a one stop shop for area information including Green River Lake and the surrounding area. So, on your next visit to Green River Lake, make it a point to stop by the Visitor Center and learn all that Green River Lake has to offer.
